Sea Change I

March 1, 2014

schee4866bpScheelite – Calcium Tungstate – is an excellent aid to Discernment.

By far the biggest influence here is the March 2 Saturn Station, just because Saturn’s bigger than the other players.  But let’s start with the other players, because while a Saturn Station tells us in no uncertain terms to Focus on The Most Important Thing, the other players will give us hints about just what is The Most Important Thing, in case we didn’t already know.

Ceres, the Shadow Period, and the Last Third of Libra

Ceres is Retrograde from February 26 till June 1, and triple-crosses 19 Libra to 2 Scorpio.  The “Shadow Period” runs from December 4 through August 12.  So, what’s all that mean for us?

Well, we really should be introducing a Retrograde period at the start of the Shadow Period, because when a planet goes Retrograde it recrosses the same section of the Zodiac three times.  If you have a natal planet there, it will be triggered thrice.  As we’ve indicated before, this means that…

The Universe really wants us to get this message.

We call the first crossing the Can-Opener because it usually opens up an old wound for us to heal.  The second crossing is the Exposition, because the nature of the wound is exposed so we can Empathize with, and find Compassion for, our wounded self.

So once a planet goes Retrograde, we’re already starting into the Exposition phase.  It’d be nice if we had a warning before the Can-Opener, wouldn’t it.  In the Exposition phase, the issue that wounded us is replayed at a slower speed, so we can understand what’s happening.  Once the planet goes Direct again and recrosses our natal planet for the third time, if we did out homework at the Exposition, then the wound is retriggered again, but this time we know how to handle it.  So we call the third crossing the Confidence-Builder.

Even without a natal planet within the Shadow Period, we get the Opportunity to work on any issue we have around the zone of the Zodiac that’s triple-crossed.  The last third of Libra is about…

Making new friends.

The first third is about reaching out to Other, and the second third about finding the kind of Culture we’d enjoy living in.

So, do you have any issues around making new friends?  Do you trust strangers?  What sort of tests do you put people through before you accept them?  Are people trying to befriend you and you’re suspicious?  At the same time are you scared that they’ll give up on you?  Whatever new-friends issue that was up for you between December 4 and February 26, we’ll now be reviewing until June 1.

Then from June 1 through August 12, we’ll see how well we did at learning these important Lessons that the Universe was so generously handing out.

Okay, so what about Ceres, which is to say, who was it that was triggering our wounds and pushing us toward new friends?  Well, Ceres is about Sustainability and Sustenance.  So whatever’s up, it’s about Community, about Survival.

What will these new friends Expect of us?  Will be be able to live up to their Expectations?  What is it we Expect of them?  If we had to depend on them for our Survival, would they come through?  If they depended on us for their Survival, would we come through?  Will our old friends be jealous, or think we’ve gone astray?  Would we be able to depend on our old friends for Survival, and they on us?

Sustainability and Sustenance go hand in hand – we have to give up surplus in order to get to Sustainability.

Abandonment and Suffocation

I was going to save this till when we next spoke about Venus, which isn’t too far off, but it’s relevant here, so I’ll bring it up now.

We were all born with some degree of Abandonment and some degree of Suffocation.  Most of us emphasize one or the other.  When someone appears to reject us, it triggers our Abandonment.  If Abandonment is our preferred way of facing the World, we usually overreact.  Often their behavior isn’t even about us, but about them.  This is a particular problem cross-Culturally, because we won’t understand what is meant by gestures, phrases, or even body language and facial expressions.

But you know what?  Every family has its own Culture!  So even in the same Culture we’ll run into this with neighbors.  Some people enjoy making fun of others, but they sometimes don’t really mean it, because it’s a way of testing their new friends to see where there wounds are, and to see if they can be trusted, and how far.  Sometimes, of course, they really do mean it!    A fundamental rule in the Recovery Movement is that Teasing is Abuse.  But that doesn’t make it go away.

And of course, we all had experiences in “Past” Lives and in our infancy and childhood, where we felt Abandoned.  If those were serious enough or repeated enough, it left a scar that’s still tender.  So if we approach the World with a core issue of Abandonment, and we stumble into a crowd that enjoys making fun of others, then making new friends is going to be rare and difficult.

The other side of this coin is Suffocation.  If we had significant adults in our childhood and infancy who monitored our every breath and freaked out when we farted, and especially if they judged us and tried to control us, then we’ll have a priori expectations that people will Suffocate us rather than Abandon us.  Or if we experienced Past Lives as a Slave or under strict surveillance by anyone.  The two are usually correlated.

Of course we could easily be approaching the World with both Abandonment and Suffocation.  That makes new friends a minefield.  The point is, most of our Relationship problems are our own.  It’s not that they are doing anything wrong, no matter how much it looks that way.  It’s that we are interpreting their actions and words and gestures from the perspective of our Abandonment or Suffocation.  This isn’t always true, but if we want to keep old friends or make new ones, or both, we need to assume it’s our own issue until proven otherwise.  And careful about what we consider “proof”!

So, with Ceres Retrograding across the last third of Libra, we’re scouting for folks who prove to be trustworthy enough and friendly enough and reliable enough that we can depend on them for our Survival, and they on us.  Discernment is important; no matter how flexible we believe ourselves to be, it’s unlikely that we can just choose a Community by throwing darts at the board and then go fit in perfectly.  But there’s also a very large opportunity here for us to examine our own motivations and perspectives, and if we can eliminate some Self-Sabotage here, that’ll make a huge difference in the Sustainability of our Community.

That Big River in Egypt

So of course we’re talking about Denial here – denying our own Abandonment makes someone else appear to be rejecting us, and denying our own Suffocation makes someone else appear to be trying to control us.  And if we’re going to trust them, we need to know what they’re denying – that’s the social function of Teasing, after all.  So then, where’s Eris?  Kind of like Where’s Waldo?  Eris is Quincunx to the Godfather here, Saturn.  Meaning?

No matter where we look for The Most Important Thing, we need to maintain our Curiosity about what’s hidden under the surface.  Not Judgment, but Curiosity.  “I wonder what’s really true here” in the honest sense of the word Wonder.  The willingness to wait to see what emerges is a big part of real Wonder.  Asking the question is what invites the Veil to lift.

Uranus Station I

November 20, 2013

uphane5000bpUranus Portals in the Queue

As we’ll see shortly, Uranus is already Stationary – within one degree of its December 17 Full Moon-Station.  The Moon will light up Uranus every week between now and then.  We’ve already talked about this week’s illumination, Portal 11.20.  Also awaiting us are…

  • Portal 11.28 (approximately 3amnoon PST November 28) Pluto-Moon/Ceres-Uranus T-Square, with a nest of interlocking Yods.
  • Portal 12.04 (7am6pm PST December 4, give or take an hour or so) Moon/Pluto-Uranus-Vesta T-Square over a Yin Gate.
  • Portal 12.10 (around 7pm PST December 10 till 3am PST December 11) Pluto-Moon/Uranus-Vesta T-Square.
  • Portal 12.17-18 (from December 14 or earlier through around 9am PST December 18); the Direct Station itself is exact around 10am PST on December 17, but gets carried to December 18 by a Uranus-Pluto-Moon T-Square.
  • Portal 12.21 (also starting around December 14 and running to 3pm PST December 21); Uranus has gone Stationary already, but meanwhile Venus is also since December 14 within one degree of her Retrograde Station, which is exact about five hours after the Northern Winter Solstice.  Beware, West Coast North America – the Solstice occurs at 9:11 am PST.
  • Portal 12.25 (1pm till 10pm PST December 25) Past the Station, so Uranus won’t be quite as active, but still: a Moon-Reindeer Conjunction – no, wait – it’s a Pluto-Uranus-Moon/Mars T-Square.

We’ll be dissecting each of these in turn as we get closer to them.

The Uranus Shadow Period in Time

Uranus is out near the Aphelion (farthest distance from the Sun) of its slightly-oval orbit, and at this distance from us, its Shadow Period lasts 363 days – it finished its previous Shadow Period on March 28, 2013 and started the current one two days later, and it completes the current Shadow Period on April 2, 2014 and begins the next only one day later.  So speaking of its Shadow Period doesn’t make a lot of sense, unless you want to flag those few days in between as Party Days, where you don’t have to worry about Uranus making any triple Angles with your Natal planets.  Uranus reached Aphelion in Spring 2009, though, so it’s now moving closer to us, which will eventually shorten its Shadow Period.

But it certainly makes sense to talk about its Stations, and using one degree of Sensitivity, those are lasting about 50 days.  Here are the milestones and millstones on the current Uranus sinewave…

  • March 30, 2013 – Uranus enters Shadow Period at 8:35 Aries
  • May 27-July 17 – Uranus officially Stationary (within one degree of exact Station)
  • July 17 – Uranus exactly Stationary Retrograde at 12:31 Aries
  • August 20 – Jupiter Square Uranus Can-Opener
  • October 27-December 17 – Uranus Stationary (within one degree of exact Station)
  • November 1 – 4th of 7 Uranus-Pluto Squares
  • December 17 – Uranus exactly Stationary Direct at 8:35 Aries
  • December 24 – Mars Opposite Uranus Can-Opener
  • February 25, 2014 – Jupiter Square Uranus Exposition
  • April 2 – Uranus leaves Shadow Period at 12:31 Aries
  • April 20 – Jupiter Square Uranus Confidence-Builder
  • April 21 – 5th of 7 Uranus-Pluto Squares (Pluto Stationary)
  • April 22 – Mars Opposite Uranus Exposition
  • June 24 – Mars Opposite Uranus Confidence-Builder

We’ve color-coded all of the Repeating Events – remember the Can-Opener, Exposition, Confidence-Builder triad?  When an astrological Event Repeats, it indicates that our Planetary Guides really want us to pay attention to this one.  When the outer planets dance together more than three times, Big Changes are afoot.  Notice the Grand Cross on April 20-22, when all three Repeating Angles with Uranus occur together.

The Uranus Shadow Period in Space

The span of eight-and-a-half to twelve-and-a-half degrees of Aries is most of the Cancer Duad and all of the Leo Duad of Aries.  This is important because the Uranus-Pluto Square is the main theme of our post-Time adventures in 2012-2015.

Aries is about Creating.  About channeling a directive to make some thing or idea or process or Community or whatever, without a whole lot of (or any) step-by-step instructions.  Like Noah.  If somebody has to or wants to tell you how to do it, it’s not Creating, and Aries loses interest.

By the time we get to the Cancer Duad, we’re starting to build version 2.0.  We’ve gone through the first-iteration prototype and debriefed it, we know a lot more about how to build it and a little more about what it’s supposed to be or do, and now we’re working on the pilot version.  Of course we don’t know that the first one was a prototype and this one a pilot – we think all along that each version is going to be the Cat’s meow, till we’re humbled in the Mutable Duads (Gemini, Virgo, Sadge, Pisces).

We tried to get other people interested in our project during the Taurus Duad, but most people just saw it as self-indulgence.  In the Leo Duad, we start to seriously promote our invention.

What does this mean for Uranus?  Our invention is our Identity.  Uranus dipped a toe into Aries for several months in mid-2010, noticed some unfinished business and went back to Pisces to clean it up, and then got serious about Aries in Spring 2011.  Uranus in Aries is about re-creating our Ego-Self Identity to bring it more into alignment with our Soul-Self.  We noticed in 2010 that we were out of Yintegrity.  In the 2011-2012 Shadow Period we crossed the Aries and Taurus Duads, making our first tentative attempts at updating our self-image.  The 2012-2013 Shadow Period was mostly about the Gemini Duad, when we were humbled by the apparent foolishness of our production, and took it apart so we could start over.

Remember that The Fool Archetype is about Courage, not Shame.  The Fool Archetype starts the Tarot Cycle, just as Aries starts the astrological Cycle.

Right now, Uranus is still Retrograde but virtually Stationary deep in the Cancer Duad, and we’re at the drawing board making last-minute design changes in preparation for starting final pilot-stage construction come mid-December.  We move into the Confidence-Builder phase of the Leo Duad in mid-February.  At that point we start flight-testing this version of our newly-reinvented Self.

If you’re in the middle of a Big Reorganization of your Life/Lifestyle/Identity or Health and you’re feeling a bit frustrated because it’s not falling into place as quickly as you can imagine that it might, take a break and honor yourself for the hard work you’ve done so far.  It’s not time for your Project to fall together yet, there are a few more Ducks to line up.  Check back in at the end of February, to see if progress feels better.

I know, it doesn’t really feel like you know what you’re doing.  But that’s not you, that’s the nature of Aries.  Aries is Cardinal Fire – Creative Spirit.  It’s very tentative in hardcopy Reality.  Aries operates totally from instinct.  In general Aries lacks intellectual understanding of what it’s doing.  On any Arian Project, give yourself five years to understand what you’ve been doing.  Till then, it’s all Faith.  Trust it.

I used to run in the Forest at night.  If you unfocused just right, you could see faint footsteps tracing the trail in dim greenish light, like those glowing fluorescent Stars on the ceiling of your nursery.  You don’t have to run in the dark, but in Aries you do have to feel your way along.  Embrace your desire to Judge.  Remember those “three enemies” – the Voices of Doubt, Cynicism, and Fear.  Recognize them and greet them with a big smile and a big welcome – they’re lost Children of yours.  They just need your Love and they’ll be fine.

Those bright Third-Chakra-orange, apparently-disorganized needles are Crystals of Uranophane, a Hydrated Calcium Uranyl Nesosilicate.  Uranyl is a Uranium Oxide ion.  Calcium provides structure.  Nesosilicates (like Topaz and Garnet) are organized very simply, but reliably.  We’d be lost without the Hydration.  Then there’s the Uranium – highly toxic but very Powerful.  Identity can be like that.

Mercury’s Shadow

October 18, 2013

When a planet goes Retrograde, it recrosses the same (usually fairly small) region of the Zodiac three times – once forward, then backwards, then forward again.  If there are other planets within that region – or if you have natal planets there – then they meet multiple times, often setting the stage for a Big Lesson.  We call the three meetings

  1. The Can-Opener (because something often catches us off guard and regresses us)
  2. The Exposition (because the same something recurs but more slowly so we can understand it better and respond, and
  3. The Confidence-Builder (because by the time it happens the third time, we know how to handle it).

In between the Can-Opener and the Exposition, there’s a Retrograde Station, which is likely to re-stimulate the Can-Opener experience.  And in between the Exposition and the Confidence-Builder, there’s a Direct Station, which is likely to further expose the Exposition.

The reason we don’t pay much attention to the inner planets is that we get so much practice with them that we’re all well experienced at dealing with them.  Mercury crosses every other planet once a year.  On the other hand, for example, Chiron crosses each inner planet only once every fifty years, and the outer planets less often than that (not counting the triple crossings we mentioned above).  So in this blog we mostly talk about the interactions that are rare – those between the slow-moving outer planets.

So we don’t usually make a big deal about Mercury turning Retrograde, it happens three times a year – we get lots of practice.  There’s a Can-Opener, but it’s usually not a big deal.

We’re talking about it now because it dances thrice over the North Node, and as you know, the Nodes are being Squared by Juno, and that Karmic-Gorgon-wrestling is the astrological Main Event these days.  In addition, Saturn just crossed the North Node as well – another recent Main Event, so Mercury’s dancing with Saturn too.  Since Mercury is about Awareness, and the Juno-Nodes Main Event is about what’s coming into Consciousness – aka what’s coming into Awareness, it’s timely.  And Mercury also dances with the Eclipse.

One more piece of background, the Shadow Period.  Mercury goes Retrograde on October 21 (at half past 3am PDT) at 19 degrees of Scorpio.  Then it goes backward, back to 3 of Scorpio.  If we just pay attention to the Retrograde period, we miss the Can-Opener, and in doing so we can miss a major opportunity for personal growth.  We’ve encountered the Can-Opener, we haven’t missed it in that sense, but we don’t realize that it’s part of a set, so we don’t notice the connection and what we’ve learned.

So we need to look at the whole dance, from Mercury’s first crossing of 3 Scorpio, through the Retrograde period, and beyond, till Mercury again crosses 19 Scorpio.  Astrologers call the whole shebang the Shadow Period.  So here’s the whole Mercury timetable…

  • October 1 – Mercury first crosses 3 Scorpio and enters its Shadow Period
  • October 2 – Mercury Square Juno Can-Opener 5 Scorpio
  • October 5-6 – Mercury Conjunct North Node Can-Opener (aka North Node Initiates Mercury) 9 Scorpio
  • October 8 – Mercury Conjunct Saturn Can-Opener (aka Saturn Initiates Mercury) 11 Scorpio
  • October 21 – Mercury Stationary Retrograde at 19 Scorpio
  • October 29 – Mercury Conjunct Saturn Exposition (ie, Retrograde) 14 Scorpio
  • November 1 – Mercury-Sun Conjunction 10 Scorpio
  • November 2 – Mercury Square Juno Exposition 9 Scorpio
  • November 2-3 – Mercury Conjunct North Node Exposition 8 Scorpio
  • (November 3 – Solar Eclipse 12 Scorpio)
  • November 10 – Mercury Stationary Direct 3 Scorpio
  • November 17-18 – Mercury Conjunct North Node Confidence-Builder 7 Scorpio
  • November 24 – Mercury Square Juno Confidence-Builder 16 Scorpio
  • November 25 – Mercury Conjunct Saturn Confidence-Builder 17 Scorpio
  • November 27 – Mercury leaves Shadow Period Scorpio 19

If we rotate the matrix to emphasize content rather than timing, we get…

  • Mercury Square Juno October 2, November 2, November 24
  • Mercury Conjunct North Node Oct 5-6, Nov 2-3, Nov 17-18
  • Mercury Conjunct Saturn October 8, October 29, November 25

Notice how the Juno Square and North Node Conjunction converge in time on November 2-3, while the Juno Square and the Saturn Conjunction converge on November 24-25.  Things could get complicated then, even though it’s the (relatively easy) Expositions November 2-3 and the (easier yet) Confidence-Builders November 24-25, because events will reverberate with one another.  The November 3 Solar Eclipse will emphasis to the earlier dates.

Juno Squares Saturn November 29 (17 Scorpio), but by then we’re done with the Juno-Nodes T-Squares.

Now that we’ve led you through the maze, what’s the reward?  Well, mostly it’s – if you have a journal,

  • October 29 will teach you about whatever you stumbled over around October 8 (Mercury-Saturn: New Awareness of our Priorities and Limits)
  • November 2-3 will teach you about anything that flummoxed you between October 2 and October 6 (Mercury-Juno-North Node: New Awareness of Unconscious Identity and our Mission in the Lifetime)

Give or take a day or two on the dates, as events in the “real” World, even though related to a given astrological event, are often triggered by a third party (such as the Moon).

If you don’t have a journal, then you can see why it behooves us to start paying attention when a planet crosses into its Shadow Period, rather than waiting till it turns Retrograde.  I don’t keep a daily journal per se, but I can tell from Earthquakes and Mythic New Moon that I was feeling a bit paranoid between October 2 and 6.  I’ll be delighted if by the end of November I’m Confident about not being mauled by these Gorgon-wrestling matches!

We’re busy wrestling, but it wouldn’t hurt to try to find time to see what other Shadow Periods we’re immersed in (such as Jupiter’s – Jupiter turns Retrograde November 6).
